Its abundantly clear: American muscle is American in America. Granted, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger are assembled in Canada. But Americans love them so much more.

And they love them more in February 2015 than in February 2014. Camaro volume was up 3% in February. Challenger sales jumped 42%, a gain of 1561 units. 

And the top-selling Ford Mustang, Americas 21st-best-selling car through the first two months of 2015, was up 32% in new sixth-gen form to 8454 units, 129% more than the number of Mustangs sold in February 2011.

Sports cars - or coupes with performance intent - that sell certainly share Detroit badges in common. Sales of small European coupes and roadsters in the Mercedes-Benz SLKs class slid 2% to just 1433 units in February, little better than one-sixth the Mustangs total and 1172 units fewer than the Chevrolet Corvette managed on its own.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we dont know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. The BMW 6-Series has been removed from the premium list because we dont use this space as a showcase for sedans (unless automakers release data for high-end sporting models like the Lexus ISF, as Toyota Canada does) and the 6-Series lineup now relies heavily on a sedan variant. GoodCarBadCar is always open to hearing about the ways you would break down segments, so feel free to get in touch. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in the first two months of February were 206, 354, 126, 30, and 154, respectively. Tesla, unfortunately, doesnt release model-specific monthly U.S. sales data, but HybridCars.com estimates 1400 February Tesla sales, 2900 YTD.

True, sales of these very vehicles were way down in February 2014, the period with which were comparing these February 2015 sales figures. But even in comparison with February 2013, sales last month were up 21%. 

Howd it happen? Well, ignore the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia, both of which sold less often this year than last. Fords Expedition was up 16%, a gain of 447 units. But the Expedition was not the segment motivator in February, either.

GMs quartet jumped 66%, an improvement of 6635 units. Including the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV takes those figures up to 68% and 7742 units. The group of six accounted for 8.2% of GMs U.S. volume in February 2015.

INSIDE THE AUTO BUSINESS
Continuing with the Volvo theme, Volvos U.S. profits fell 7% in 2014. We’re no strangers to Volvo’s dangerously poor results in North America - and the responsibility of the new XC90 to succeed - but globally, Volvo is reporting record profits, reports Automotive News.

INSIDE THE CANADIAN AUTO BUSINESS
It appears that 2015 could be a healthy year for the automotive industry in Canada. Beginning with Ford adding 400 jobs in Oakville, ON, to build the new Edge, The Globe & Mail provides readers with the 2014 and 2015 good news stories for this Canadian industry. "Mandates given to Canadian plants to produce vehicles for global markets – such as the Edge and its Lincoln cousin, the MKX – are victories in the race for auto investment because they prolong the lives of factories for eight to 10 years."

The CR-V is a competitive sibling. It didnt like being in third place.  Knocking the Civic down to third still wasnt enough. Head over to TTAC to read the details of this sales race. "But the CR-V didn’t stop with the Civic. In each of 2014’s final three months, the CR-V also outsold the Accord, America’s second-best-selling car."                                        

RECALL
General Motors recalled 58,698 2013-2015 Cadillac ATSs for a visibility issue. FCA recalled 25,734 2015 Chrysler 200s for a transmission problem. Kia recalled 12,361 brand new 2016 Sorentos for an accelerator pedal issue. Another GM recall invlved 1177 MY2014 Chevrolet Impalas for a brake pad problem.

INSIDE THE AUTO BUSINESS
The EPA has revised fuel economy testing procedures to enable automakers to more accurately calculate fuel economy ratings. Automotive News spoke to the director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation Air Quality to provide more details. "The changes will help ensure the accuracy of fuel economy labels, and clarify how the EPA expects the tests to be done."

DEEPER INSIDE THE AUTO BUSINESS
After a period of reputation damaging incidents, Honda is shaking things up by replacing their Chief Executive Officer with a well-rounded engineer who has been with Honda since the year I was born. Reuters notes that "Hachigos appointment marks the first time Honda has named as CEO a non-director and someone who has not headed the firms R&D company." Will this change inspire renewed confidence in Honda?

RECALL
Status unchanged. Nothing since yesterday’s notice from Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz recalls of 209,017 vehicles.

Commercial Van Sales In America February 2015 YTD

February 2015 marked the third consecutive month in which Americas top-selling commercial van was the Ford Transit. February was the Transits ninth month on the market. 33,578 have been sold since its tenure began.

Overall Ford commercial van sales jumped 30% to 13,936 in February 2015 as the loss of half the E-Series February 2014 total was more than offset by the Transits addition and the smaller Transit Connects 25% increase.

The Transit Connect led a fast-growing small commercial van category which improved by 59% in February; by 86% so far this year. 

The Transits category, meanwhile, was let down by decreased General Motors sales. On the flip side, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Nissan NV, and Ram ProMaster all posted meaningful improvements.
